SEPTEMBER 2002
Diversity?
Dear
Teammate Within
the last month thousands of new college students began their college
adventure. Do you remember
what it was like to be away from home for the first time; away from the
assistance, advice and authority of your parents; learning to prioritize
your own responsibilities and making decisions on your own?
University life is very different today! Last
week “John” called our office. He
said he was desperate! He is
studying for the Foreign Service at a major university and is on the verge
of quitting and going home. The
reason he was so distraught is that the university is requiring him to
watch pornographic homosexual films in the name of “diversity”!
What that has to do with the Foreign Service is beyond me. There
is a battle going on everyday on our university campuses for the hearts
and minds of the youth of America. Part
of that battle is over words. “Diversity” is one of the highest
virtues in the university today. Professors
teach it, administrators use it, and presidents preach it. But they may
not be as diverse as you think. More
and more “diversity” is used as a weapon to filter out anyone who does
not agree with his or her extremist worldview. A
quote from the Wall Street Journal shows the reality of diversity: The Wall Street
Journal, 8.30.02: REVIEW & OUTLOOK: One Faculty Indivisible We favor diversity too.
We simply look forward to the day that college administrators stop
preening about the principle long enough to see how
little of it exists among the most powerful and influential force on
campus -- their own teachers. The
good news is that the reason John was calling us is because he had just
found our family of web sites at WWW.LEADERU.COM.
He found there a diverse view that is seldom taught in our
universities. Until now, most
college students receive a mainly one-sided view of the world from their
professors, which does not include a Christian perspective. Today students
can find a new perspective on issues they care about from those they
respect and admire. As John explored this site,
he found intelligent men and women —professors who believe in God and
live a life of faith—addressing many life issues confronting students
today. These are men and women who care about students, study the issues
and speak from personal experience. He was calling to thank us for helping
him in his hour of need. Patti
and I thank you for helping to reach students like John with the truth of
the gospel. We simply could
not be in this ministry without you. In His Service,
P.S. We just launched our own web site.
If you would like to see it just go to www.peterculver.org
